How was a dictionary imagined?

This dictionary has been prepared not only to reveal our living Turkish but also the richness that the Turkish language has gained throughout its historical course, to help Turkish children connect with their past, and to assist them in reading and understanding texts from 100-150 years ago, which mean the recent history for nations.

Language is a carrier; like a sacred river carrying a nation's culture, art, faith, thought system, way of life, and values from yesterday to today for centuries. This dictionary is a synopsis of the Turkish language from this river, a kind of inventory. It is beyond commonplace dictionaries like historical language dictionaries or spoken language dictionaries.

In our dictionary, old words that are completing their eras and are in danger of being forgotten, as well as newly derived living Turkish words and even newly coined ones are included. This has been done due to deliberate interventions in the Turkish language leading to its increasing impoverishment and loss of expressive ability. Just imagine the concept confusion and nuances that disappear when 12 words such as âşikâr (obvious), bedîhî (clearly), dekolte (decollate), münhal (vacant), müstehcen (obscene) are replaced by a single common word; it is worth considering how such interventions impoverish language and obliterate subtleties. This is just one of many examples.

In our centuries-old folk songs, our music, our fairy tales, our poems, words that have stayed alive until our times have been forgotten by Turkish children and have been replaced with inventions or foreign-origin words that do not align with the rules of our language. If narrow-mindedness continues in today's language dictionary, its limits will be indefinable. With today's language, a Turkish child is incapable of understanding a Mehmet Akif, a Yahyâ Kemal, or even Atatürk. Our job is to present whatever materials exist. It is always possible to reveal the dictionary of our living language by refining these materials in the future.

e) Words that have existed since the 13th century and some continue to exist in colloquial speech written with Arabic script can be found in old Turkish Turkish and dialectical notes in documents and works. Some of these words can also be found in works by contemporary writers such as Kemal Tâhir and Mustafa Necâti Sepetçioğlu.

e) Popular foreign words with their Turkish counterparts are included in addition to foreign words that do not have Turkish equivalents.

The dictionary generally does not speculate but observes; it takes shape based on the material we have at hand.
